RTT Information

This year’s Africa Response Team Training will be taking place at the Brackenhurst Conference Centre in Limuru, Kenya. There will be a required orientation taking place on Tuesday, June 5th from 4 to 6pm for those who are only attending the RTT. The Response Team Training (RTT) will follow taking place from Wednesday at 8 am through Friday at 5:30 pm. The RTT will follow on from the Africa Regional Conference. You are welcome to attend both conferences. For those attending the Africa Regional Conference, your orientation will take place during the conference and you will not need attend the orientation taking place at 4pm.

This Response Team Training (RTT) provides three days of intensive modular training on how to respond to child safety reports. This course is designed to specifically equip response team members, with the knowledge and skills to respond to a report of harm to a child within your organisation. This training is a specialised course focusing on response team protocols for organisations who have an established Child Safety program and are able to respond to any reports of concern. This training is not a general Child Safety Training programme, although it will give your organisation an overview of what is ultimately needed. Attendees should be members of your organization who will be part of your response team, either as a team member, management/leadership of a response or member care staff who will support those directly involve.

The Response Team Training is reserved for CSPN Member organisations. Mission agencies and international schools are encouraged to send 2-4 people to the same RTT event. CSPN Members must be approved by their organisation’s gatekeeper to attend. Please plan to attend every RTT session over all three days of the training.

The Brackenhurst Conference Center does have a shuttle. The cost has already be calculated into the registration fee. Please note that if you would like to ride by shuttle you may need to be willing to wait for others to arrive in order to all be picked up together. Please enter your flight information when you register so we are able to schedule the shuttle pickups.

If you wish, you can to make your own way to Brackenhurst by taxi. It will cost around $100. There are several licensed taxi drivers at arrivals, with official booths where you can arrange a ride.

Other Helpful Information
You will need proof of yellow fever vaccination for entry to Kenya. Malaria is endemic to Kenya, so ensure you have some prophylactic cover. Malarone, larium or doxycline are the most common drugs of choice, but check with your own travel clinic or doctor for advice.

The exchange rate is approx $1=103.7 Kenyan shillings. ATMs are available at the airport but occasionally do not work. There are plenty of Bureau de Change offices at the airport, so changing money on arrival is not a problem.

Bring a cell phone “unlocked” and buy a Kenyan SIM card for it on arrival.  They’re cheap and you can buy a pay- as- you go voucher

It is pleasantly warm in Nairobi in June- with 25c temperatures during the day time and down to 18c at night. Brackenhurst will be cooler. Bring light clothes, a bit warmer layers for night, and waterproofs/umbrella.

Bring mosquito repellent and long sleeved clothes for the evenings.

Internet is widely available in Kenyan hubs, but out of town can be unreliable. If you have a lap-top you can connect it (broadband even Wi-Fi) at most cafes. Brackenhurst has an internet café.

Drink bottled water - not tap water. Use bottled water for brushing your teeth.

Use common safety sense. Be aware of pickpockets in town; don’t have expensive gadgets on show.

Tipping is not customary, but salaries are low, small gratuities for good service are very much appreciated.
